Violence against women has increased more than 70 percent in Mexico

Violence against women has increased dramatically in Mexico over the past five years. 7 out of 10 girls or women are victims of some form of violence. This information came out in a study of the Statistics Office of Mexico.

Graciela Marcos, president of the national statistics agency INEGI, said in a press conference on Tuesday that violence against women in the country is a challenge and poses a public health problem.

A wave of protests has spread as the killing of women and girls in Mexico continues to rise. On an average, around 10 women are killed every day in the country and millions of women go missing.

According to the country’s National Statistics Agency, more than 70 percent of the 5.5 million women above the age of 15 are victims of some form of violence. This figure is 4 percentage points higher than the last survey conducted in 2016.

Sexual violence was the most reported. This rate is 8 percentage points higher. 23 percent of these women said they had experienced sexual violence in the past 12 months.

On the other hand, about 35 percent of women have been victims of physical violence, compared to 34 percent in 2016. And 52 percent of women reported being emotionally abused, up from 49 percent previously.

According to INEGI, most of the women victims of physical and sexual violence did not tell anyone about this or did not seek any help from government institutions in this regard.

Only in some areas of economic oppression, such as workplace discrimination or withholding of personal assets, has the situation improved, the study found. This rate has decreased from 29 percent earlier to 27 percent.

And only in the southern state of Chiapas did less than half of women surveyed (49%) report experiencing some form of violence, while an average of 77 percent of women in Mexico City and surrounding states reported experiencing violence.
