South Korea records world’s lowest birth rate rate again

Once again, the name of South Korea has become number one in the list of countries with the most backward birth rate.

The country’s birth rate against a woman is only 0.81 percent. The official birth rate statistics were released on Wednesday, the BBC reported.

South Korea’s birth rate fell below one for the first time in 2018. Since then it has only been decreasing. Three more points decreased this year than last year.

With this, the birth rate in South Korea decreased for the sixth year in a row. There is now an average of 1.6 children per couple. Without any immigration, an average of 2.1 children per couple is needed to maintain the country’s population.

In the 1970s, a woman in South Korea had an average of four children.

Abnormal decline in birth rate is a serious concern for a country. As a result, due to the increase in the proportion of elderly people in the total population of the country, the demand for the health care system and the retirement sector increases and the government expenditure increases a lot.

On the other hand, lack of active youth leads to labor shortage in the country. Directly which has a negative impact on the country’s economy.

In 2020, South Korea had more deaths than births. The first such incident was undoubtedly a warning for the country.

Economic pressures and long working hours have led to a reluctance to have children among young South Koreans, especially women, experts say.

Experts blame the high cost of living, skyrocketing house prices and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic as the reason for the drop in the birth rate in 2021.
